In many stories women have been to blame for wrong doings, even at the start of history through religion with Eve and Lilith or mythology with Medusa. These three women all have been tied to or compared to serpents. Lilith chose not to submit to man and was cast as evil and the mother of demons, Medusa was raped and blamed, and Eve was blamed for the “fall of man”. I chose to represent these women that were shaped into a symbol of a serpent, deemed evil, against their will, so I could repaint their image in a different light. The snake’s possessive nature in my piece captures how these women’s identities have been stripped away and replaced with a curse.
